Nine Goals Conceded, Manager Sacked — Can Tunisia Salvage Any Pride Against the Dutch?

"Tunisia conceded 9 goals in 2 games, sacked their manager mid-tournament, and are already eliminated. Netherlands scored 7 in 2 games and are chasing top spot. On paper this is the most one-sided fixture of Matchday 3 — but Tunisia have pride left to play for."

๐Ÿ† Group F's Dead Rubber With a Twist — Tunisia Tunisia vs Netherlands Netherlands, World Cup 2026

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F concludes its group stage programme as Tunisia face the Netherlands at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City. Tunisia's tournament has been nothing short of a disaster — 5-1 to Sweden, 4-0 to Japan, nine goals conceded, zero scored, manager Sabri Lamouchi sacked mid-tournament with legendary Hervรฉ Renard brought in as emergency replacement. They are already eliminated. The Netherlands, meanwhile, have been Group F's most clinical side when they get going — that 5-1 demolition of Sweden was one of the most impressive performances of the tournament, with Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey both scoring twice. Ronald Koeman's side need only a draw to progress but will want a win to chase top spot from Japan. For Tunisia, this is simply about leaving the tournament with a shred of dignity.

Tunisia 1-3 Netherlands — Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

⚽ Skhiri OG 4' | Brobbey 7' | Mastouri 54' | Van Hecke 62'

๐Ÿ’ฅ The Netherlands were utterly dominant from the first whistle and topped Group F in style. An Ellyes Skhiri own goal opened the scoring in the 4th minute before Brian Brobbey — sensational all tournament — added a second just three minutes later with a poacher's finish. The Dutch then controlled possession completely, stifling Tunisia without breaking a sweat. Hannibal Mejbri — Tunisia's one genuine quality throughout this tournament — pulled one back with a superb cross that Hazem Mastouri headed home, briefly sparking hope. Netherlands killed it off eight minutes later through Jan Paul van Hecke's header from a Tijjani Reijnders cross. Ten goals scored in three group games, Netherlands go into the knockouts as the tournament's most in-form European side. Tunisia — who sacked their manager after the first match — leave eliminated, their World Cup dream in ruins.

๐ŸŒŸ Man of the Match: Brian Brobbey (Netherlands) — physical, tireless, clinical — one of the breakout stars of Group F.

➡️ What's next: Netherlands top Group F and face the Group G runner-up in the Round of 32. Tunisia are eliminated.

Tunisia Tunisia — The Most Chaotic Campaign of the Tournament

I genuinely feel for Tunisia here. They qualified for the World Cup without conceding a single goal in their entire CAF qualifying group — that shows genuine defensive quality. Then they arrived here and conceded nine in two games. Something went catastrophically wrong. The truth is the step up from African qualification to facing Sweden and Japan at a World Cup is enormous — and Tunisia were not prepared for the intensity of the press that both sides applied. Hannibal Mejbri has been their best player — the young Manchester United midfielder showed real quality against Japan in duels and final-third passes — but he cannot do it alone. Ellyes Skhiri anchors the midfield with his 83 caps and will want a performance to remember in his likely final World Cup appearance. Renard arrived and the 4-0 loss continued immediately — but he at least needs to show tonight that Tunisia have some defensive organisation left.

⚠️ Squad News: No injury concerns for Tunisia. Renard is expected to set up in a more defensive 4-3-3 shape to try to limit the damage. Changes likely further forward with Ismaรซl Gharbi possibly replacing Elias Saad.

Predicted lineup (4-3-3):

PositionPlayer
GoalkeeperAymen Dahmen
DefenceYan Valery, Montassar Talbi, Dylan Bronn, Ali Abdi
MidfieldEllyes Skhiri (c), Hannibal Mejbri, Anis Ben Slimane
AttackElias Achouri, Ismaรซl Gharbi, Elias Saad

Key Players to Watch:

  • ๐ŸŒŸ Hannibal Mejbri — Manchester United's Tunisian midfielder has been their only bright spot at this tournament — his energy, dribbling and willingness to fight is the one thing Tunisia can hold their heads high about
  • Ellyes Skhiri — Eintracht Frankfurt's experienced captain with 83 caps — this is almost certainly his last World Cup and he will want to go out fighting
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Ismaรซl Gharbi — The young PSG-linked attacker could start here and provides Tunisia's most creative threat going forward

Netherlands Netherlands — Dangerous When Motivated, Unpredictable Otherwise

The Netherlands at this tournament have been exactly what Netherlands teams always are — brilliant in one game, underwhelming in another. They drew 2-2 with Japan when twice leading. Then they demolished Sweden 5-1 with one of the most clinical 90-minute displays of the group stage. Cody Gakpo has been the tournament's most complete wide forward — two goals, two assists, constant danger. Brian Brobbey up front gave the Dutch the physical striker they needed after Memphis Depay's fitness concerns, and his two goals against Sweden were clinical. Frenkie de Jong in midfield is the orchestrator — when he has time and space, the Netherlands are genuinely frightening. Ronald Koeman will want top spot and will push for a big win here to keep pressure on Japan's goal difference.

⚠️ Squad News: Memphis Depay is in the squad but remains a doubt to start. Koeman may rotate one or two players ahead of the knockout rounds but will likely keep the core strong to chase top spot. No other injury concerns.

Predicted lineup (4-3-3):

PositionPlayer
GoalkeeperBart Verbruggen
DefenceDenzel Dumfries, Virgil van Dijk (c), Micky van de Ven, Nathan Akรฉ
MidfieldRyan Gravenberch, Frenkie de Jong, Tijjani Reijnders
AttackCody Gakpo, Brian Brobbey, Donyell Malen / Memphis Depay

Key Players to Watch:

Cody Gakpo

  • ๐ŸŒŸ Cody Gakpo — Liverpool's Dutch winger has been the Netherlands' best player at this tournament — two goals, constantly threatening, impossible to pin down
  • Brian Brobbey — The Sunderland striker's physical presence changed the Netherlands' dynamic against Sweden — his two goals were exactly what Koeman needed
  • ๐ŸŽฏ Tijjani Reijnders — Manchester City's midfielder has been incredible for the Dutch — seven international goals in 32 caps and a habit of arriving late into dangerous positions
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Frenkie de Jong — Barcelona's midfield engine, the man who controls the tempo and releases Gakpo and Brobbey at exactly the right moments

⚔️ Head to Head — Tunisia Tunisia vs Netherlands Netherlands

YearCompetitionResult

1994FriendlyDraw 2-2
1978FriendlyNetherlands 4-0 Tunisia
2026World Cup Group FFirst ever competitive meeting

Tunisia have never beaten the Netherlands in three previous meetings. The Dutch won 4-0 in 1978 — the same year they reached the World Cup Final. This is their first ever competitive encounter. History could not be more strongly in favour of the Netherlands — but Tunisia did famously beat France at the 2022 World Cup, so upsets in dead rubber group games do happen.

๐ŸŽฏ The Key Battle — Netherlands Reijnders vs Tunisia Skhiri

The battle I am watching tonight is Tijjani Reijnders against Ellyes Skhiri. Reijnders has been one of the tournament's most effective late-arriving midfielders — he finds pockets, arrives in the box at exactly the wrong time for defenders, and has a remarkable goal record for a midfielder. Skhiri's job is to track him and stop those late runs — but Tunisia have shown absolutely zero ability to prevent midfield overruns in either of their first two games. If Reijnders finds the space he found against Sweden, Tunisia are going to have a very long night. The only caveat is that Skhiri has 83 caps of World Cup and international experience — on his best day he is genuinely effective. This is probably his last chance to show it.

๐Ÿ’ญ My Personal Take

Honestly, this is the hardest article to write with enthusiasm because we all know what is going to happen. The Netherlands are going to win this comfortably. But here is the human story I keep coming back to: Hannibal Mejbri. This kid was absolutely magnificent in parts against Japan — fearless, direct, creative — playing in a team that has completely fallen apart around him. Tonight he plays his last game at a World Cup, almost certainly for years, against one of Europe's best sides. If he puts in a brilliant individual performance in a losing cause, I want people to remember his name. He is 21 years old and the future of Tunisian football. That, for me, is the real story of this game.

๐ŸŒถ️ Hot Take

Over 3.5 Netherlands Goals is the play here — and I feel very confident about it. Tunisia conceded five to Sweden and four to Japan. The Netherlands scored five against Sweden — a far better defensive team than Tunisia. Koeman wants top spot and will push his side to score heavily and improve goal difference over Japan. Tunisia's defence has shown zero ability to organise or hold a shape when pressed. The only reason this might not happen is if the Dutch rotate too heavily and take their foot off the gas — but even a rotated Netherlands XI has enough quality to run riot against this Tunisia side. Netherlands to Win and Over 3.5 Goals at around 5/4 is my strongest bet of the entire Matchday 3 card.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Our Prediction

This is not a match — it is a training exercise for the Netherlands. Tunisia will fight with pride and Mejbri will have moments, but the gulf in quality is simply too enormous. Expect a comfortable, possibly heavy Dutch win as Koeman's side tune up for the knockout rounds in style.
